The Stephen James Partnership

Legal Counsel, Corporate Legal Services (Asset Management)

A permanent opportunity to join a European legal team of a global investment management business and advise on the regulation, governance and strategic initiatives shaping the enterprise. Ideal for experienced asset management or financial services regulatory lawyers who want in-house impact.

Role Overview

You’ve built deep regulatory expertise. Now put it to work at a business founded on the idea that an investment company should act solely in its clients’ interests.

We are seeking a Legal Counsel with 5+ years’ PQE to join a Corporate Legal Services unit, reporting to the head of the unit. The team supports strategic business priorities, regulatory advice, procurement and commercial contracts, and Legal Operations.

Experience and Skills

The ideal candidate has spent time in-house at an international asset manager or in private practice, advising buy-side clients on financial services regulation.

You will:

  • Provide technical legal and regulatory advice on EU and UK regulation, and advise on how to implement it within the business’s risk, governance and controls framework
  • Work with Compliance, Public Policy, Risk, Change Management and the business units to respond to emerging regulation and deliver regulatory change
  • Advise on complex business change initiatives, including regional organisation, regulatory authorisations and corporate infrastructure
  • Carry out research and horizon scanning on regulation affecting the enterprise
  • Partner with legal teams globally and represent the business on industry bodies

You will bring:

  • 5+ years’ PQE, in-house at an international asset manager and/or in private practice
  • Good working knowledge of MiFID, UCITS and AIFM
  • Experience advising buy-side businesses (retail financial services regulation is an advantage)
  • An understanding of UK regulators’ priorities, and experience responding to consultation papers and implementing regulatory change
  • Excellent communication, stakeholder management, negotiation and drafting skills

Regulatory roles in asset management at this level rarely come up.
