Designated Teacher for Looked After Children & Care Leavers

Manchester

Full Time, 35 Hours per Week

Fixed-Term Contract until 31st January 2027

£25+ per hour

Reed FE is seeking an experienced and passionate Designated Teacher for Children Looked After and Care Leavers to support some of our most vulnerable learners.

This is a rewarding opportunity for a qualified teacher who is committed to improving educational outcomes, raising aspirations and championing the needs of looked after children, previously looked after young people and care leavers within a Further Education setting. The role is based across campus locations and will involve working closely with students, carers, local authorities and internal support teams to ensure learners receive the support they need to thrive both academically and personally.

The Role

As the Designated Teacher, you will take lead responsibility for the educational attainment, progress and achievement of looked after children and care leavers. You will coordinate and manage termly Personal Education Plans (PEPs), ensuring they are robust, student-centred and focused on academic success and enrichment opportunities.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading the planning and coordination of termly PEP reviews.
  • Acting as the central point of contact between education staff, local authorities, carers and external agencies.
  • Monitoring attendance, progress, achievement and progression outcomes for the cohort.
  • Promoting high aspirations and supporting learners to access careers guidance, progression pathways and higher education opportunities.
  • Supporting teaching and support staff to develop understanding of the needs of looked after children and care leavers.
  • Facilitating multi-agency meetings and promoting positive outcomes for learners.
  • Ensuring the role is delivered in line with statutory safeguarding guidance and the Designated Teacher responsibilities outlined in Keeping Children Safe in Education.

We are looking for someone who has:

  • PGCE, Cert Ed or equivalent teaching qualification.
  • GCSE (or equivalent) in English and Maths.
  • Level 3 qualification in a relevant field such as Social Care, Youth Work, Health or Social Care.
  • Experience working with vulnerable young people within an educational setting.
  • Experience setting educational targets and improving learner outcomes.
  • Strong safeguarding knowledge and experience responding appropriately to concerns.
  • Excellent communication, organisation and relationship-building skills.
  • Confidence working collaboratively with a range of internal and external stakeholders.
