Indicative Salary - Approx. £70-75k & Car & Benefits

About us:

We are an independent, multidisciplinary engineering, environmental and project management consultancy. We provide support across a wide range of sectors and stages of the built environment, helping improve communities, protect the environment and create value for our clients.

Role Overview

This is a senior leadership and business-building opportunity for an experienced, chartered Structural

Engineer who will help establish and develop our presence in the catchment area, including North Wales, and Anglesey. The precise office location is yet to be determined. The successful candidate will combine strong technical expertise with commercial acumen, client development, people leadership and the ability to grow a sustainable local presence for the business.

Establishing and developing a new office

The target catchment area is the North West, Manchester, Wrexham, Liverpool, Mold, Chester and Ellesmere Port. The precise office location will be determined, taking account of business opportunities, accessibility and the needs of the wider team.

You will help establish our presence in a new geographical market, with the office location to be determined in line with business needs and the successful candidate’s suitability.

You’ll also develop a practical plan for building the office’s structural engineering workload, client base, capability and team over time.

Business development and growth

Identify, pursue and convert new business opportunities to build a sustainable and profitable structural engineering workload.

Develop new client relationships while strengthening existing relationships and growing repeat business.

Prepare and contribute to fee proposals, tenders, bids, scopes of service and other commercial submissions.

Maintain an active understanding of the local market, sector opportunities, competitor activity and potential routes to growth.

Work with the Structural Engineering Services Director and colleagues across the business to agree priorities, pursue opportunities and support strategic business targets.

Monitor the pipeline and conversion of opportunities and contribute to realistic workload, resource and revenue forecasting.

Technical leadership and engineering delivery

  • Provide credible, hands-on technical leadership in structural engineering and remain sufficiently involved in technical work to guide, review and support the team.
  • Lead and oversee the delivery of structural engineering projects, ensuring designs meet the client brief, applicable standards, project requirements and Egniol’s quality expectations.
  • Take responsibility for technical decisions appropriate to the role and seek specialist guidance or support where required.
  • Ensure the company’s internal Quality Management System (QMS), checking procedures and design assurance protocols are followed.
  • Identify where existing procedures need to be improved and contribute to the development of appropriate new QMS procedures.
  • Coordinate effectively with clients, architects, civil engineers, environmental specialists, contractors and other members of the design team.
  • Attend and lead client meetings, design team meetings and site meetings as required.
  • Use and support appropriate structural design software. The existing role specification references Tedds, Tekla and CADS; proficiency in relevant tools will be expected.
  • Promote safe working practices and ensure that health and safety requirements are considered in project planning and delivery.
  • Contribute to the overall performance of the business and the achievement of agreed strategic and financial targets.

People leadership, mentoring and succession

  • Build, lead and develop a capable structural engineering team as the office and workload grow.
  • Provide clear direction, set expectations, delegate appropriately and support team members to deliver high-quality work.
  • Mentor and coach engineers at different stages of their careers, including less experienced members of the structural and wider engineering teams.
  • Support recruitment, onboarding, development planning, performance conversations and retention of team members.
  • Identify skills gaps and future capability needs, supporting training, professional development and progression towards chartership where appropriate.
  • Develop a positive team culture based on accountability, collaboration, inclusion, professional standards and our core values.
  • Support succession planning and help develop future technical and people leaders.
  • Address performance, workload or team issues constructively and in a timely manner, seeking support where appropriate.

We are looking for an entrepreneurial, commercially minded and technically credible chartered Structural Engineer who can combine the standards of an experienced engineering professional with the drive and judgement to build a business presence. The successful candidate will be comfortable switching between technical problem-solving, client conversations, commercial decisions and people leadership. They should be motivated by the opportunity to shape and grow an office, not simply inherit an established team and workload.

Essential experience and qualifications

A degree in Structural Engineering or another relevant engineering discipline.

Chartered membership of the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) or the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).

A minimum of 10 years’ experience working in an engineering consultancy or a closely related structural engineering environment.

At least 5 years’ experience in a leadership role, with evidence of successfully leading people and teams.

A proven track record in the management and delivery of structural engineering projects, including multidisciplinary projects where relevant.

Strong technical knowledge and the ability to lead, review and assure structural engineering work.

Demonstrable experience of client relationship management and business development, including identifying opportunities and preparing fee proposals.

Experience contributing to business planning, forecasting, tender strategy and wider operational improvement.
