Astro Education Ltd
Psychology Graduate Teaching Assistant / Behaviour Mentor

Location: Manchester

Contract: Full-time

Roles: Teaching Assistant or Behaviour Mentor

Ideal for: Psychology Graduates and Aspiring Teachers

About the Role

Astro Education is working with a school in the Manchester area to recruit enthusiastic, motivated and dedicated Psychology Graduates for full-time Teaching Assistant and Behaviour Mentor opportunities.

These roles are ideal for recent Psychology graduates who are looking to gain valuable hands-on experience in education, develop their understanding of child and adolescent development, and take their first steps towards a career in teaching, educational psychology or pastoral support.

Working within a school environment, you will support students with their learning, wellbeing, behaviour and personal development. Depending on the school and the role, you may work on a one-to-one basis, with small groups or across the wider classroom, helping pupils overcome barriers to learning and engage positively with their education.

We are particularly interested in candidates who are passionate about working with young people, have a genuine interest in psychology and behaviour, and are considering a future career in teaching or education.

No teaching qualification is required for these support roles, making this an excellent opportunity for graduates looking to gain practical experience before pursuing teacher training or further study.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support students in the classroom, helping them access learning and complete assigned tasks.
  • Work one-to-one or with small groups to provide targeted academic and pastoral support.
  • Assist teachers in delivering engaging lessons and maintaining a positive learning environment.
  • Support students who may experience behavioural, emotional or social challenges.
  • Use positive behaviour strategies to encourage engagement, emotional regulation and appropriate classroom conduct.
  • Build trusting, professional relationships with students and encourage their confidence and independence.
  • Help identify barriers to learning and communicate concerns to teaching and pastoral staff.
  • Support students who may have additional learning needs, where appropriate to the role.
  • Encourage positive attitudes towards education, attendance and personal development.
  • Follow school policies, behaviour management procedures and safeguarding guidance.
Who Would Be Suitable for This Role?

We welcome applications from:

  • Psychology graduates looking to apply their academic knowledge in a practical school setting.
  • Aspiring teachers who want to gain classroom experience before applying for teacher training.
  • Recent graduates looking to begin a career in education, pastoral support or behaviour management.
  • Candidates interested in educational or child psychology who want to develop their experience working with young people.
  • Individuals with mentoring, coaching or youth work experience who are passionate about supporting students.
  • Graduates considering careers in SEND, SEMH, educational psychology or pastoral care.
  • Previous school experience is beneficial but is not essential for every opportunity. We are looking for candidates who demonstrate the right attitude, resilience, communication skills and commitment to supporting young people.
Requirements
  • A degree in Psychology or a related subject is desirable; Psychology graduates are particularly encouraged to apply.
  • A genuine interest in child development, behaviour and education.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Confidence building positive relationships with young people.
  • A patient, empathetic and proactive approach.
  • The ability to remain calm and professional when managing challenging situations.
  • A willingness to learn and work collaboratively with teachers and pastoral teams.
  • A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
