Strong & Herd LLP

Export Control & Customs Compliance Advisor

£48,000–£58,000 per annum, depending on knowledge, skills and relevant experience

Permanent | Full-time | 37.5 hours per week

UK or Ireland | Flexible remote/hybrid working | Client travel required

About the role

Strong & Herd LLP is looking for an experienced Export Control & Customs Compliance Advisor to join our specialist international trade team.

This is a varied, hands-on, client-facing role for someone with practical UK export-control experience and a strong understanding of UK customs who enjoys solving problems, sharing knowledge, and turning complex regulatory requirements into practical advice.

You do not need to come from a consultancy background. You may have gained your experience in-house within trade compliance, customs, import/export, shipping, manufacturing, or a related environment.

What matters to us is your practical knowledge, professional judgement, clear communication, and willingness to contribute as part of a small, collaborative team.

What you'll be doing

The role spans export controls, customs compliance, training, consultancy, audits, technical client support and Shipping Office support.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Advising clients on UK export controls and export licensing, including classification, licensing routes, licence conditions, end-use, end-user and destination considerations.
  • Supporting export licence applications, including OGELs, OIELs, and SIELs.
  • Delivering export-control training and developing capability across selected customs and international-trade courses.
  • Undertaking export-control compliance audits, reviews and health checks.
  • Supporting organisations preparing for or responding to ECJU compliance audits.
  • Undertaking or supporting customs compliance audits and HMRC-related compliance activity.
  • Researching and answering technical questions through our client help-desk service.
  • Preparing high-quality audit and consultancy reports, compliance handbooks, policies, procedures and guidance.
  • Supporting our Manchester Shipping Office with export-control, licensing, customs and operational queries.
  • Working directly with clients across different industries and supply chains.

What we're looking for

Essential

We're looking for someone who can demonstrate:

  • Practical UK export-control experience, with a sound understanding of classification, licensing, compliance processes and recordkeeping.
  • A strong practical understanding of UK customs, supported by hands-on experience within trade compliance, customs, import/export or a related environment.
  • Strong research and analytical skills.
  • Excellent written English and the ability to produce clear, accurate and professional reports.
  • Strong verbal communication skills and the confidence and aptitude to explain complex subjects clearly and deliver training.
  • Excellent organisation and time-management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Sound professional judgement and the confidence to recognise when further research or specialist input is required.
  • A positive, practical and genuinely collaborative approach.

Previous consultancy experience isn't essential, and neither is having held an "Advisor" job title.

It would be great if you also have

  • Experience delivering export-control training.
  • Experience undertaking export-control compliance audits or reviews.
  • Experience supporting clients preparing for or responding to ECJU compliance audits.
  • Hands-on experience with UK export licence applications.
  • Practical experience of OGELs, OIELs and SIELs.
  • Experience of customs compliance audits or HMRC compliance reviews.
  • Experience producing client reports, compliance handbooks, policies or procedures.
  • Experience within shipping, logistics or export operations.

Knowledge or practical experience of US export controls, including EAR and/or ITAR, would be useful but is not essential.

The person matters to us.

Strong & Herd is a small team, and this role works across different parts of our business.

We're looking for someone who can take ownership and work independently without operating in isolation.

You'll need to be comfortable sharing knowledge, asking colleagues for input, helping others when priorities require it and working across training, consultancy, technical support and our Shipping Office.

For us, technical capability matters, but so do accountability, initiative, communication, and being someone colleagues can rely on.

Location and travel

Applications are welcomed from candidates based in the UK or Ireland.

The position offers flexible remote/hybrid working and can be predominantly remote for the right candidate. Our Shipping Office is based in Manchester, so we'd welcome someone who can spend time working alongside the team there where practical, but living in or near Manchester is not essential.

This is a client-facing role and travel to client premises will be required for training, audits, consultancy, meetings and on-site support. As most of our clients are UK-based, candidates based in Ireland should expect to travel to the UK as required to fulfil client assignments. Overnight stays may also be required.

What we offer

£48,000–£58,000 per annum, depending on knowledge, skills and relevant experience.

Permanent, full-time employment.

37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday.

Flexible remote/hybrid working.

A varied role where you can use and develop your expertise across export controls, customs, consultancy, auditing and training.

Work directly with businesses across different industries and supply chains.

The opportunity to broaden your technical knowledge within an established international-trade consultancy.
