About READ Foundation

READ Foundation is a UK-based registered charity working to provide access to quality education to vulnerable children in our regions of work. We create opportunities for orphan and needy children to go to school, gain an education and build a better life for themselves.

We currently focus on constructing new schools, providing sponsorship for orphans and expanding our educational portfolio to reflect the significant humanitarian and development needs across the world.

About Donor Care

The Donor Care department at READ is essential to the organisation's success, fulfilling its role as the primary hub for customer service, donor retention and income generation.

During Ramadan, Donor Care plays a particularly important role in strengthening relationships with existing donors, retaining Orphan Sponsorships and generating vital income for READ Foundation's charitable projects and appeals.

Purpose of Job

The Ramadan Donor Care Officer is a temporary, campaign-specific position recruited to support READ Foundation's Ramadan 2027 fundraising and donor-retention activities.

The role is primarily focused on two key objectives:

  • Donor Retention: Maximising Orphan Sponsorship renewals through proactive donor engagement, relationship management and outbound telephone calls
  • Income Generation: Raising vital funds through READ Foundation's Ramadan outbound fundraising campaign by engaging existing and prospective donors

Successful candidates will primarily be allocated to one of two teams:

  • Orphan Sponsorship Renewals Team
  • Ramadan Outbound Fundraising Team

Some Officers may work across both functions or be selected to provide additional inbound donor support.

Team allocations will be determined by management based on organisational priorities, individual competency, previous experience, training performance, productivity, attitude and operational requirements.

Extensive training and ongoing support will be provided.

Primary Ramadan Responsibilities

  • Orphan Sponsorship Renewals & Retention

READ Foundation's Orphan Sponsorship programme is one of the organisation's flagship projects, and Ramadan represents a particularly important period for sponsorship renewals and donor retention.

A significant number of Orphan Sponsorships become due for renewal during Ramadan. Officers allocated to this team will proactively engage existing sponsors, primarily through outbound calls, to maximise retention while delivering an excellent donor experience.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Proactively contact existing Orphan Sponsors regarding upcoming or outstanding renewals
  • Build positive relationships and rapport through professional, warm and engaging communication
  • Encourage and facilitate successful sponsorship renewals
  • Develop extensive knowledge of READ Foundation's Orphan Sponsorship programme
  • Provide donors with relevant information, feedback and updates about their sponsorship
  • Confidently answer questions and address concerns or objections
  • Identify and resolve barriers that may prevent donors from renewing
  • Process renewals and associated donations accurately and securely
  • Maintain accurate donor records and record call outcomes within the CRM
  • Complete appropriate follow-up activities
  • Work towards individual and departmental retention targets while maintaining excellent customer-service standards
  • Ramadan Outbound Fundraising & Income Generation

The second primary function involves participation in READ Foundation's Ramadan outbound fundraising campaign.

Throughout Ramadan, Officers will proactively engage primarily with existing donors (UK and North America), alongside prospective donors where appropriate, to raise vital funds for the organisation's projects and appeals.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Make proactive outbound calls to donors as part of Ramadan fundraising campaigns
  • Confidently engage donors regarding READ Foundation's projects, appeals and charitable activities
  • Develop strong project and campaign knowledge to communicate READ Foundation's work effectively
  • Build rapport and cultivate positive, long-term donor relationships
  • Identify appropriate fundraising opportunities and encourage charitable contributions
  • Confidently make fundraising asks while remaining professional, respectful and donor-focused
  • Engage with a wide range of donors, including high-potential and high-value donors where assigned
  • Answer donor questions and provide accurate project information
  • Process donations accurately and securely
  • Record donor interactions, call outcomes and follow-up actions within the CRM
  • Work towards individual and departmental fundraising objectives
  • Ensure all donor engagement complies with READ Foundation's policies and relevant fundraising regulations

This role requires individuals who are confident communicators, comfortable making outbound calls, motivated by achieving results and passionate about delivering an excellent donor experience.

Inbound Donor Support & Additional Departmental Tasks

Selected Ramadan Donor Care Officers may also be trained and allocated to support inbound calls and other departmental functions, depending on operational requirements, individual skills and performance.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Handling inbound donor enquiries and processing donations
  • Responding to questions relating to READ Foundation's projects, appeals and campaigns
  • Supporting donors with Zakat-related enquiries, with appropriate escalation where specialist guidance is required
  • Resolving payment-related issues, including incomplete or failed donations
  • Responding to donor emails and customer-service enquiries
  • Updating donor records and processing donations
  • Supporting pledge follow-up and other donor-retention activities
  • Providing general administrative support across Donor Care
  • Supporting fundraising events and mosque collections where required, including assisting donors, handling PDQ donations and pledge forms, and supporting event logistics

Pre-Ramadan Training & Campaign Preparation

Successful candidates will commence onboarding and induction provisionally from late November to early December 2026, with exact dates to be confirmed.

Training will cover:

  • READ Foundation's mission, projects and Ramadan campaigns
  • Orphan Sponsorship program knowledge
  • Donor engagement, customer service and telephone fundraising
  • Rapport building, objection handling and retention techniques
  • CRM, dialer and donation-processing systems
  • GDPR, fundraising compliance and safeguarding
  • Zakat-related knowledge and relevant donor enquiries

A pre-Ramadan outbound campaign is expected to commence in late December 2026 or early January 2027, providing Officers with an opportunity to develop and demonstrate their skills ahead of Ramadan.

Management will use training and campaign performance to inform final Ramadan team allocations.

Working Hours & Ramadan Commitment

This is a temporary, zero-hour campaign position, with working hours varying according to operational requirements.

There are no guaranteed hours in any given week, and payment will only be made for hours worked, in accordance with the applicable contract and statutory entitlements.

Due to the intensive and seasonal nature of the role, applicants must be able to commit to a minimum availability of 3-4 days per week throughout Ramadan 2027, with flexibility for weekday, evening and weekend shifts where required.

Shift allocations will be determined by operational requirements, individual availability and performance. Meeting the minimum availability requirement does not guarantee a minimum number of shifts or working hours.

Shifts times will vary throughout Ramadan between 11am-5.30pm and 4pm-10pm.

Important Information:

  • Day shifts will be the primary staffing priority
  • Evening shifts will be limited and subject to operational requirements
  • Staff may express their preferred shifts; however, allocations will be determined by management based on availability, performance, competency and departmental requirements
  • Appropriate rest breaks and Iftar arrangements will be provided for applicable evening shifts
  • All shift timings are provisional and may change

Final working arrangements and expectations will be confirmed during the recruitment and onboarding process.

Important Temporary Employment Disclaimer

This position is being recruited specifically for READ Foundation's Ramadan 2027 campaign and is not a permanent employment opportunity.

The role is offered on a temporary, zero-hour basis, with workloads and staffing requirements expected to fluctuate throughout the campaign.

Following Ramadan, the requirement for additional Donor Care staff is expected to reduce.

However, depending on individual performance, competency, reliability, conduct, departmental requirements and availability of work, selected Officers may be considered for additional seasonal or ad-hoc work beyond Ramadan.

Any continuation will be subject to organisational requirements and the applicable terms and conditions at that time.

There is no guarantee of continued employment, ongoing work or a minimum number of hours beyond the Ramadan campaign.
