The Opportunity

An established and rapidly growing engineering consultancy is looking to appoint a Senior Power Systems Engineer to join its specialist power engineering team in Manchester.
The business delivers complex engineering and design solutions across mission-critical and critical infrastructure environments, working on technically challenging projects where power availability, resilience and system performance are fundamental.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Power Systems Engineer looking to take greater technical responsibility for the analysis, design and delivery of complex electrical power systems, while also working closely with clients and multidisciplinary engineering teams.
The role offers exposure to major power infrastructure projects, including HV and MV systems, grid connections, substations and critical electrical infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

  • Undertake and technically lead power systems studies, analysis and design
  • Carry out studies including load flow, short circuit/fault analysis, protection and coordination, harmonic analysis and other power system assessments
  • Develop and assess electrical power system architectures for complex infrastructure projects
  • Support the design and analysis of HV and MV electrical distribution systems
  • Use specialist power systems software including ETAP, DIgSILENT PowerFactory and/or SKM
  • Review electrical networks to identify technical risks, constraints and opportunities for optimisation
  • Produce high-quality technical reports, calculations, specifications and supporting engineering documentation
  • Ensure designs and studies comply with relevant UK and international standards, regulations and client requirements
  • Provide technical input throughout different stages of the engineering and project lifecycle
  • Work collaboratively with electrical, mechanical and other specialist engineering disciplines
  • Provide technical guidance and support to less experienced engineers where required
  • Support project planning and ensure engineering deliverables are completed to agreed programmes and quality standards
  • Liaise directly with clients, utilities, contractors and other project stakeholders
  • Build strong client relationships and communicate complex technical findings clearly
  • Support the wider team in identifying technical solutions to complex power infrastructure challenges

About You

You will be an experienced electrical or power systems engineer with a strong background in power system analysis and design.
You should be comfortable taking responsibility for technical deliverables and working on complex projects where system reliability, resilience and regulatory compliance are critical.

    • SKM PowerTools
  • Strong understanding of electrical distribution and power system principles
  • Experience producing and reviewing technical calculations, studies and engineering documentation
  • Ability to interpret electrical system information including single-line diagrams and network data
  • Experience delivering engineering work within agreed project requirements and timescales
  • Strong technical problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to confidently communicate technical information to clients and other stakeholders
  • Experience supporting and developing client relationships

Desirable Experience

Experience within highly regulated, mission-critical or critical infrastructure environments would be particularly beneficial.
Relevant sector exposure could include:

  • Data centres and mission-critical facilities
  • Power and energy infrastructure
  • Utilities
  • Industrial infrastructure
  • Major electrical distribution projects
  • Other highly regulated engineering environments

Experience of HV/MV systems, substations, grid connections, protection studies, harmonics or critical power infrastructure would also be advantageous.

Why Join?

This is an opportunity to join a growing specialist engineering environment working on technically complex power infrastructure projects, with access to multidisciplinary expertise and significant opportunities for continued technical development.
The position combines hands-on technical engineering, project delivery and client interaction, making it well suited to an experienced engineer who wants to continue developing both their technical and commercial responsibilities.
