Street Lighting Engineer
- Part-time (3 days per week, flexible)
- Location: Manchester
- Hourly rate: £45 per hour Umbrella
- Length of role: Initial 12 months
Manchester City Council is seeking a Street Lighting Engineer to join our Highways Service team within the Neighbourhoods Directorate. This role is crucial for the effective delivery and continuous improvement of public lighting across the highway network. The successful candidate will lead on planning, coordination, and execution of maintenance and improvement programmes, ensuring all street lighting assets are safe, compliant, and efficient.
Day-to-day of the role:
- Lead the planning and execution of street lighting services, including overseeing design processes and managing project delivery from feasibility through to commissioning.
- Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders, including developers and contractors, to advise on environmental impacts and deliver improvement projects.
- Manage operational maintenance and stakeholder coordination, ensuring effective routine and reactive maintenance, asset management, and resolution of historic issues.
- Engage closely with councillors, residents, and contractors, managing enquiries, complaints, and service communications.
- Oversee testing, inspections, and environmental considerations, such as tree management, to ensure safety and compliance.
- Administer contracts and manage service delivery through external contractors, focusing on quality, value for money, and innovation in sustainable infrastructure.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- Relevant electrical street lighting highway design experience.
- Undergraduate degree or MSc in a relevant electrical or engineering discipline, or HNC/HND in Engineering or equivalent.
- Chartered or Incorporated Engineer with relevant institution membership preferred.
- Strong project management skills and experience in managing complex technical projects.
- Excellent communication skills, capable of effectively transferring complex information and negotiating with a wide range of stakeholders.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, demonstrating leadership and initiative.
