• Location: Gorton Retail Market, Gorton Cross Street, Manchester, M18
• Job Type: Full-time, Temporary (5 - 6 months)

Manchester City Council are looking for a proactive and community-oriented Assistant Market Manager to join our team at Gorton Retail Market. This role is crucial for maintaining a safe, vibrant, and well-managed market environment, supporting local traders and enhancing the community's shopping experience.

Day-to-day of the role:

• Work closely with the Market Manager to oversee the daily operations of Gorton Market.
• Maintain strong working relationships with traders, providing guidance, resolving issues, and ensuring a supportive environment.
• Ensure compliance with health and safety standards, identifying risks and implementing preventive measures.
• Manage financial tasks including rent collection and monitoring accounts.
• Respond promptly to operational issues to maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming space.
• Support market events, promotions, and operational improvements to enhance the market's appeal and efficiency.
• Act as a visible and approachable presence on-site, fostering an inclusive environment where businesses can thrive.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

• Excellent communication and organisational skills.
• Experience in markets, retail, or other customer-facing environments.
• Ability to work independently, make sound decisions, and adapt to changing priorities.
• Commitment to delivering high standards of service.
• Availability to work weekends and evenings, supporting the market during peak trading periods.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with team members and stakeholders to achieve joint outcomes.
• Knowledge of health and safety requirements and legislation relevant to public spaces.
• Used to working independently with minimal supervision.
• Comfortable challenging people and having difficult conversations when required.
• Experienced in collecting payments, chasing debts or enforcing compliance.
• Confident dealing with members of the public, traders and occasional conflict.
• Practical and visible rather than office-based.
• Happy working weekends and irregular hours.
• Able to work with minimal supervision and use sound judgement when escalating issues.
• Experienced in retail operations, markets, shopping centres, housing management, estates management, facilities management, enforcement, security supervision or similar frontline environments
