Role summary

To set up and develop the Manchester ABAS function, driving business development activity, winning new clients, building strong market relationships, and creating a high-performing team to support growth and service delivery across the region.

The role will contribute to operational improvement, client service excellence, team development, and strategic growth initiatives, while helping establish the Manchester office as a key hub within the wider Northwest ABAS business.


Key Responsibilities

Client Management and Service Delivery

  • Grow new client base and extended services to current clients
  • Ensure delivery of high-quality client service within agreed deadlines and budgets.
  • Review assignments including accounts, tax computations, advisory reports, and management information.
  • Maintain regular communication with clients and internal service teams.
  • Identify opportunities for additional services and cross-selling.
  • Escalate significant client issues or risks
  • Ensure client records and workflow systems are maintained accurately.
  • Support delivery of a positive client experience.

Business Development

  • Support partners and directors in achieving growth targets by creating and building the Manchester ABAS function.
  • Is confident in networking and understands the Manchester market, being able to generate potential leads from intermediaries and contacts
  • Build and maintain relationships with clients and external stakeholders.
  • Contribute to tender proposals and presentations.
  • Identify opportunities to expand services to existing and prospective clients.
  • Contribute to marketing initiatives, articles, events, and networking activities.

Technical and Quality Responsibilities

  • Maintain up-to-date technical knowledge relevant to the role.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant accounting, tax, audit, and regulatory standards.
  • Support quality assurance and risk management initiatives.
  • Assist with implementation of technical updates and process improvements.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to team members.
  • Contribute to standardisation and continuous improvement projects.

Team Leadership and People Management

  • Grow portfolio and develop a team in a new location (Manchester)
  • Provide coaching and support to team members.
  • Delegate work effectively and provide clear instructions.
  • Conduct performance reviews and regular feedback discussions.
  • Support learning and development of staff.
  • Identify training needs and development opportunities.
  • Promote team engagement and wellbeing.
  • Assist with recruitment, onboarding, and retention initiatives.
  • Foster a collaborative and inclusive working environment.

Communication

  • Communicate effectively with clients, colleagues, and stakeholders.
  • Contribute to the North West Senior Leadership team
  • Promote the organisation’s values and culture.
  • Support collaboration across departments and offices.

Continuous Improvement and Innovation

  • Identify opportunities to improve processes, systems, and client delivery.
  • Support digital transformation and operational modernisation.
  • Contribute to innovation initiatives including AI, workflow automation, and technology adoption.
  • Participate in strategic and departmental improvement projects.


Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • ACA/ACCA Qualified or qualified by experience
  • Up to date technical knowledge of Auditing and Financial Reporting Standards.
  • Departmental objectives and key performance indicators
  • Awareness of the firm’s services and product offering
  • Understands ICAEW and /or ACCA exam structure, work experience and ethics training requirements
  • Appraisal system and CPD programme
  • Knowledge of student competencies
  • Is technically competent and compliant and gives due consideration to risk.
  • Generates ideas for clients and for the firm, striving for improvements and efficiencies
  • Plans to makes effective use of time and consistently meets deadlines
  • Is able to undertake internal projects, communicate findings and see through to completion
  • Builds effective relationships internally across departments and externally
  • Works flexibly and considers the needs of the whole department
