A Little More About Your New Role…
This is an exciting opportunity to become part of our multi-disciplinary service line within the WSP Land Team. As an Assistant Land Consultant based in our Manchester First Street office, you will be directly supporting the wider team in the identification of landowners, occupiers and other parties that hold a legal interest in land, through research and interpretation of HMLR titles and registers.
You will contribute to the land services delivery and success of high-profile infrastructure projects within Scotland the wider UK and Ireland business, supporting projects in multiple sectors, including the Energy, Water, Transport sectors, where the team supports the development of critical infrastructure that is crucial for the “net zero” economy.
You will support our teams in the delivery of land access, landowner and stakeholder engagement, and supporting projects through to the consenting stages. Your work will also support our teams in the delivery of land acquisition, formal consents, statutory orders and compensation agreements. You will undertake desktop research, site visits along with managing information through databases and GIS. You will assist in the preparation of statutory documentation and support multi-disciplinary teams in managing land & stakeholder risk for infrastructure projects.

Your new team…
- The job opportunity sits within our Land team in Manchester, which is currently 35 strong and made up of land consultants, property specialists and utility and topographical surveyors.
- We work closely with our 250 Land colleagues across the UK, Scotland and Ireland delivering land services on a variety of projects across the energy, water, road, rail and active-travel sectors.
- We are the largest Land Referencing business in the UK, having delivered high profile projects such as the A9, Heathrow Airport, Tideway London and HS2 and many more.
- We actively support people in achieving professional accreditations and have Chartered Geographers (CGeog), Chartered Town Planners (RTPI) and Chartered Surveyors (MRICS) who can support your career progression.
- We have multiple clients in the Transport, Energy, Rail and Local Authority Sectors. Specifically, you will be supporting infrastructure projects that are critical for the deployment of renewable energy, to help the UK and Ireland economies to achieve net zero carbon emissions.
- This role will report to a Consultant within the Land Team for WSP in Manchester. Full training will be provided combined with learning on-the-job as part of our projects.
- We are flexible with the role location and can combine this with home working in a hybrid role.
- Excellent verbal, written communication and organisational skills, with the ability to build relationships and to effectively influence and negotiate with both internal and external stakeholders at all levels.
- Experience of landowner engagement or working with members of the public. Any experience liaising with land agents, legal representatives, planning authorities, contractors and clients, would be an advantage.
- Familiarity of Land Referencing and/or the land acquisition process, including researching and identifying landowners/occupiers, land interests and rights in land to keep stakeholders informed of project development (desirable).
- Experience in Utilising statutory powers and other available mechanisms to acquire land (for example TWAO, DCO, NCIP, GPDO) on behalf of clients within electricity, highway, rail, water, telecoms, gas and renewable energy sectors (desirable).
- A degree in geography or another relevant discipline, which has provided you with an understanding of the complexities of land-use and/or landownership in the UK would be an advantage, but is not essential.
- To provide support to projects by undertaking technical elements of projects on time, within budget and to the agreed standards and be an active and collaborative team member, working closely with colleagues and fit seamlessly into a delivery team.
- The role will require visits to sites as part of a team, to engage with landowners and stakeholders. This may involve temporary periods staying away from home (accommodation and expenses are provided).
- A full drivers’ licence is essential.
