Senior Mechanical Engineer - Data Centres
Vertical Recruitment are working in partnership with a global leader in energy, digital, and industrial transformation. With over 50 years of experience, this company delivers seamless consulting and engineering solutions through a unique in-house design, build, operate, and maintain model.
They specialise in delivering technically complex, time-sensitive projects across critical environments including data centres, cleanrooms, laboratories, and industrial plants.
They are now seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to play a pivotal role in delivering high-quality technical services across bid, design, installation, and commissioning stages. This role will focus on the management and coordination of mechanical design for data centres and other mission-critical projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design and delivery of mechanical services in line with health and safety standards.
- Take full responsibility for the design output on data centre and critical infrastructure projects.
- Manage and mentor mechanical designers, reviewing and approving their work.
- Coordinate multi-disciplinary design inputs from clients, internal and external designers, suppliers, and subcontractors.
- Host regular design meetings, ensuring clear communication and effective change management.
- Contribute to technical strategies during bid and pre-construction phases.
- Provide engineering support on-site, resolving technical issues and supporting installation work to meet programme milestones.
- Maintain a full audit trail through design, procurement, installation, and commissioning stages.
- Ensure high-quality deliverables are completed on time and within budget.
- Act as the design lead, representing the design team internally and externally.
- Proactively address installation and commissioning challenges.
The Ideal Candidate
- Degree-qualified in Mechanical or Building Services Engineering (BEng/MEng), or equivalent demonstrable experience.
- Strong experience designing mechanical systems to industry standards and client specifications.
- Proven ability to lead design projects and deliver under tight timeframes.
- Comfortable mentoring engineers and designers at various levels.
- Experience across all stages of the project lifecycle – from concept to construction and commissioning.
- Skilled in managing specialist engineering services, including:
- Sustainability & compliance (e.g. BREEAM, Part L)
- Environmental permitting (heat, fume, noise emissions)
- Mathematical modelling (CFD, FEA)
- Support design for mechanical services
