The moving and handling team have several important initiatives to deliver. An exciting and challenging opportunity has arisen for a Moving and Handling Adviser within the Trust’s Risk Management Team to support managers at all levels and across all areas of the organisation in improving standards of moving and handling.
You will deliver training to staff regularly, but this is a varied role and you will also be assisting in: providing advice to staff and managers; direct support and advice in the management of complex M&H cases; advice on procuring and using M&H equipment appropriately; monitoring moving and handling practice in the workplace.
Preferably a registered healthcare professional (or with significant relevant experience and qualifications), you will have a sound knowledge of legislation and healthcare issues as they apply to moving and handling to enable you to provide competent advice. The role is diverse, and you will need excellent communication skills to liaise with managers and staff at all levels, as well as other specialist advisers and external bodies. Experience, or a qualification, in the delivery of workplace training would be an advantage.
On occasion working on your own initiative, you will need to understand the dynamic challenges within a complex healthcare environment and use your judgement in managing sensitive and multifaceted situations.
Main duties of the job
- To assist the Group Moving and Handling Lead and Senior Moving and Handling Advisers with all matters concerning moving and handling (or manual handling), back care and ergonomics across the Group.
- To provide advice and support to all Hospitals and Managed Clinical Services across the Group. Liaising with other moving and handling or back care specialists within the group.
- To provide specialist advice, information and guidance on moving and handling, back care and ergonomics for activities across all Hospitals and Managed Clinical Services. Provide specialist advice on moving and handling of people and loads based upon expert knowledge and current evidence based best practice. Assist clinical staff with patient handling assessments.
- Promote awareness of safer techniques and a positive safety culture that aids the reduction in musculoskeletal disorders arising from work related activities.
- To keep up to date with and appropriately apply relevant current and proposed health & safety legislation, case law, Acts of Parliament and new and emerging professional guidelines.
- Work with other stakeholders to play a key role in promoting the health, safety and wellbeing of employees and patients.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The role is multi-sited with offices bases at the Oxford Road Campus, Wythenshawe Hospital, Trafford General Hospital and North Manchester General Hospital. There is a need to travel between sites and access to your own transport is essential.

Qualifications
- Registered Healthcare Professional

Experience
- Substantial experience in a M&H advisory role in healthcare
- Practical experience in delivering M&H training in a variety of settings
- Specialist knowledge of current M&H practice, issues and legislation
- Detailed knowledge of a range of M&H equipment for moving people and loads

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
